Location: Colaba, Mumbai

Date: August- October 2023

Grade: II-B

Regal Cinema was designed by Charles Stevens, the son of the famous 19th– century Architect, F. W. Stevens who designed the famous CSMT, then Victoria Terminus. It was India’s first air-conditioned cinema having an underground parking with an elevator. It was opened in 1933 with the first film to be aired being Laurel and Hardy- The Devil’s Brother.

The 90-year-old is a pioneer of the Art Deco movement that marked the departure of the predominantly Gothic and Neo- Gothic style characteristic of the British architectural legacy. Amongst many others, Regal Cinema signalled the arrival of rapid technological and social changes in the early 1930s.

SMA was involved in the preparation of detailed documentation drawings and area statement of the property.
